Hi guys!
Do you love Thai cuisine? I do LOVE Thai food, one of my bucket list is go to Thai and live there for a few months to eat and learn about all the delicious food there!!
Not sure if I can handle the weather, because I sweat A LOT, lol! But I’m pretty sure it’s definitely worth it!
I shared a few of my favorite Thai recipes already- Thai Basil, Larb, Pad Thai, Pad See Ew and more delicious Thai recipes to come!!
Thai sticky rice is like bread or mashed potato in western cuisine. It goes well with almost every Thai foods! lol
I’m going to share Som Tam, Thai papaya salad (goes really well with sticky rice!) and Mango Sticky Rice recipe very soon, which you will need this Thai Sticky Rice recipe!
There are 2 types of sticky (AKA sweet or glutinous rice) in the market.
One is short grain sticky rice, it’s what mochi is made out of. It actually have more chewier and softer texture than the long grain one.
Thelong grain one is the Thai sticky rice. It has unique fragrance like Jasmin rice, but different.
For the method I’m sharing in this recipe, both type of rice works. So if you can’t find Thai sticky rice, you can use the short grain one instead.
Both are easy to find at your local Asian grocery store or online.
To cook Thai sticky rice, you can use the traditional steamer, but it’s not necessary. You can use any steamer you have in your kitchen. I love using my bamboo steamer because it’s the easiest to use.
Thai Sticky Rice
- Author: Seonkyoung Longest
- Total Time: 8 hours 20 mins
- Yield: 4 1x
Description
Instructions
- Wash rice gently under cold water 3 to 5 times or until you don’t see any cloudy and milky water. Cover clean rice with enough water, about 1-inch above from rice. Rice will extend their size, so make sure it’s enough water. Soak them over night in a refrigerator.
- Bring water to boil in your steamer pot or a wok.
Place a cheese cloth on steamer and gently place soaked and drained sticky rice on top of cheese cloth. Cover rice with corners of cheese cloth as much as you can then finally cover with a lid. - Place steamer on top of boiling water and steam for 20 minutes or until it’s fully cooked over medium heat.
- Transfer to a airtight container or zip lock bag. (this steamed rice is very easy to dry out when it touches air.) I recommend you to serve immediately or at least then same day. Enjoy!

See this recipe for the sweet sticky rice- https://seonkyounglongest.com/mango-sticky-rice
Also to cook in rice cooker: Soak rice over night then add same amount water (if you are using 1 cup rice, then 1 cup water) and cook as regular rice.
