Horned Frogs blow by Duke 4-0 in Super Regional tilt

FORT WORTH –TCU is heating up at precisely the right time.

Hosting Super Regional weekend for the fourth straight year, the fourth-seeded Horned Frogs blanked No. 13 Duke, 4-0, at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

TCU has now booked a ticket to the Elite Eight for five consecutive seasons and in seven of the last nine years. No program nationwide has notched more NCAA quarterfinal berths than TCU since 2015. The Horned Frogs (25-4) have also reached the final site of the NCAA Championships in nine straight seasons.

"Stillwater, here we come," said head coach David Roditi. "Our guys showed up. Oh man! The top of the lineup, starting from doubles and all the way through singles, with Jake Fearnley and Jack Pinnington, Pedro [Vives] coming back in that first set, and Lui closing it out. So impressive. One of the best performances I've seen from our guys. I couldn't be more proud.

"I loved the crowd out here," Roditi continued. "Just incredible. Here we are, advancing to the final site for the ninth straight year. So humbled and so thankful and so appreciative of what these guys are doing for TCU, for themselves. Now, we've got Kentucky in Stillwater in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Go Frogs."

Entering the match, Duke's strengths were evident, between boasting the nation's top-ranked doubles tandem and two top-45 ITA singles players. TCU neutralized any advantage the Blue Devils (20-10) might have possessed on its way to the shutout.

The Horned Frogs clinched the doubles point behind a 6-2 victory on court one by Jake Fearnley and Pedro Vives over No. 1 Garrett Johns and Pedro Rodenas. Jack Pinnington and Fearnley, respectively, then swept Johns and Rodenas on the top courts in singles. Lui Maxted earned the match-clincher, rolling over Faris Khan, 6-2, 6-1, on five.

TCU surrendered just one set all dual. The Horned Frogs claimed four of five completed first sets in singles play.

With the victory, TCU faces No. 5 Kentucky on Thursday in the NCAA Championships quarterfinals at the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Okla.

TCU moved to 53-33 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and 26-1 at home. Roditi improved to 27-9 in NCAA Tournament tilts.

The Horned Frogs are finished undefeated at home on the strength of a 13-0 record for the first time in the Roditi era. TCU has won 20 consecutive duals on the purple courts dating back to the 2023 campaign.

Doubles Rundown

Fearnley and Vives set the tone at the top from the coin toss onward. Fearnley laced home a trio of aces to begin play. All three Horned Frog pairs took their first game on serve.

The duo then scored an ad out and rolled to a double break to open up a 3-1 edge on Johns and Rodenas. Fearnley and Vives broke serve one final time ahead 5-2 to polish off their wire-to-wire takedown of the nation's top-ranked pair.

Fearnley and Vives, ranked 63rdnationally, are 4-0 since joining forces for the first time collegiately at the Big 12 Championship. The defeat of Johns and Rodenas marked their third victory over a ranked pair.

Roditi elevated Pinnington and Gorzny to court two for a battle with Michael Heller and Andrew Zhang, the ITA preseason No. 10 pair. In turn, Duncan Chan and Lui Maxted dropped down to three.

The lineup switch ultimately decided the doubles point.

Gorzny and Pinnington did the honors, staking TCU to a 1-0 head start on an ad out leading 6-5. The clincher was the only break point in the match.

Chan and Maxted led 5-2 over Faris Khan and Teddy Truwit and but were broken on serve, allowing the Blue Devil pair to force a 5-5 gridlock at the time of the clinch.

TCU is now 20-9 overall in doubles and 11-2 at home. The Horned Frogs are 18-2 when taking the doubles point.
