Son-of-Satan anime is violent but surprisingly warm.

Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Blue Exorcist is an anime series about a teen boy who finds out he's the son of the devil. It's very violent, with the opening scenes showing a man being burned to death and another bleeding from the eyes. There's also fist fighting, gunplay, and swords. Language includes "assholes," "hell." People are possessed by demons and exorcized, which can be disturbing to watch.

What's the Story?
In BLUE EXORCIST, main character Rin and his twin brother Yukio live at a Catholic monastery in Japan, where some of the kind monks are exorcists. Rin has a hard time with school and staying out of trouble; he can't keep a part-time job and his quick temper gets him into frequent fights. And on top of all this, he starts seeing demons that others can't. When Rin learns the truth -- he's the son of the worst demon of all, Satan -- he has a lot of thinking to do and changes to make.
Is It Any Good?

This thoughtful (but pretty intense) anime is excellent at storytelling and creating compelling characters. Rin's journey in Blue Exorcist is highly specific, but also similar to that of many teens; he feels different somehow, he's never fit in, and wants to know and understand who he is. Many kids will see themselves in him, not because they're the literal spawn of Satan, but because sometimes it's hard not to do bad things. Despite his challenges, Rin is a sympathetic character, and it's fun to watch him interact with those around him, including his straight-laced brother and the warm monks who try to guide him.
